McCall's 6696 Liberty Caesar Shirt Dress

I made a Liberty dress: McCall's 6696

I feel like spring pretty close! I wanted a light, basic dress that I can wear at the office. I think this pattern is very popular among sewers, it was the second time that I used it. I love the pattern and fabric.

I've posted a review on PatternReview com. Then I combined the two patterns, used the bodice and skirt of the McCall's 6696 and the sleeves and shoulder line of the Vogue 1160. But I mostly didn't change the design this time.

This Liberty was named "Caesar", it's printed peacock feathers. There are a looooot of Liberty fans in Japan. I usually check Liberty fabrics every season, but I love the classic patterns better than the new ones.
I had remembered it was easy to make the dress, and I chose the fabric without thinking about it. But it's really trickier works than I expected! Because this pattern has many parts. I had to match peacock feathers print on these parts. I tried and matched the pattern as possible. This work was like a nightmare......phew.

I think the most difficult part was the matching prints. I used a fabric with a printed panel design. This pattern has a lot of parts (bodice, skirt, waist belt and front band), so I cut these parts larger than instructed and adjusted other parts with the front band as a base. I took great care to stick the pins in.

Defining the position of the waist is very important. If the waist belt is located too much lower than your waist, it will be too puffy on your back. Also, I shorten the bodice by one inch because I am 5'4".

The cuffs don't hold well due to using a soft interface on the cuffs. I will use a harder and thicker interface next time.
I made covered buttons because I didn't have any buttons that mathed the fabric. I sewed them on the sleeves too. Because these buttons make cuffs stationary. I think it's nice idea.

I am planning make my next project soon. But I will choose a simpler pattern.
I really recommend this pattern. It has many pleats and makes a puff skirt. I have in mind it makes everyone look lovely :) It took a lot of time to sew, but it was worth it.

Fabric: 3 1/4 yards
Total time spend: 12hours

  3. Another lovely work, Eli san! You really motivated me to work on McCall's 6696, which has been sitting in my stash for a year.

The colour of the fabric goes well with your skin tone. Great choice! 12 hours? Well spent!

This pattern isn't difficult but I spent a lot of time matching the pattern.
