Hi! Recently, warm and rainy days are in continuity due to the recent typhoon. The temperature reached a record high of 30 degrees in October. This is the first for Tokyo in 37 years. There are more people who wear short-sleeved clothes than who wear long-sleeved now. Therefore, I wanted to make a dress with short sleeves and autumn version.
I made these dresses from Vogue 8813 which is a Marcy tilton designed. It's an oversized cocoon shaped and pull over dress pattern. I purchased it a few years ago. I was going to make one from the pattern when I find an appropriate knit fabric. I thought this pattern was used for knits only, but I misunderstood!(゚〇゚ ;) Non-stretch fabrics are available in the pattern.
This dress is my first Vogue 8813. I used stretch cotton and Irish linen. It turned out like bohemian style. I think this dress looks similar to Vogue 1248 (I reviewed that pattern before). It took a lot of time to make Vogue 1248 but Vogue 8813 was more quickly than I expected.
I've just finished the summer version. I wanted to make it soon, while the my idea is still fresh in my mind.
Autumn version: View B. Firstly, I changed the central part design. I had to make the three places of the gathers, but I only made two places. I thought the neck line didn't fit for these gathers, so I eliminated the top of gather.
Summer version: View C. I used SOULEIADO cotton. SOULEIADO is one of my favourite fabrics. The central part needs 1 and 3/8 yd, but I had only 7/8 yd of pink cotton. Therefore, I connected fabrics together with tape into one piece. I changed to a V neckline from a normal neckline and I made a waist band around the central part instead of making gathers. If you don't like oversized dresses, I recommend that you make a waist band. I think a waist band fits my body better than gathers.
My husband thinks this dress looks like a kimono (I think so too ). Recently, I see women in various types of kimonos. For example, it was made of denim, decorated with lace, and printed by Liberty, etc.
To be honest, I didn't like the Vogue8813 instructions. It was little complicated for me, but I love the design. I enjoy thinking about fabric combinations. I have a lot of fabric stash. This pattern is very useful to me.
Fabric and notions: Summer version pink 45" 7/8 yd, Navy 45" 2 5/8 yd, Waist and neck line tape 1 1/8yd
Total time spent: 7hours
I love the way you look in this ones! I also love the way you coordinated fabrics! Great effect adding the neck and front trim!

DeleteBoth dresses are beautiful, especially the one in the single fabric only. It is the best example I have ever seen of this Marcy Tilton pattern, and I've seen a lot! I've most of the patterns of Marcy and Katherine Tilton. I love them because they have that little twist which makes them different.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your lovely comment, Janet. I am really pleased:))) I agree that your comment! Her patterns are unique and always catch my eye.
DeleteBoth dresses are beautiful and you look gorgeous in each one. I love the fabric prints you chose and how you combine the different fabrics.

DeleteWhat sweet dresses! I love the shape that they take with the woven fabric.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Claire! I am glad that you visited my blog. I would like to make a swimsuit as well as yours(^-^)
DeleteI think you have made a wonderful job of this design and I love the way you have interpreted the pattern and made the style your own and yes your husband is right you have infused the design with kimono. Furthermore, I'd be much more attracted to this pattern if it had your version on the front! Your choice of fabrics, fabric patterns and colour is spot on! All the very best from France, Sue
ReplyDeleteThank you, Sue. I am glad that you visit my blog from France. French Provence fabrics are very popular in Japan. Among them, SOULEIADO is in fashion now, Japanese famous clothing company use it too :)
DeleteI am wondering what the back looks like on your grey knit version. Your picture fooled me at first and I thought you were wearing a cardigan over your dress--very sneaky!
ReplyDeleteI love both versions of your dress and I will be making my second 8813 in rayon batiks but I think I will use your waistband idea this time. My first one was in black and white cotton plaid and black and white tiny gingham. I love this pattern!
Thank you for showing us all your elegant work.
Thank you for visiting my blog, Lisa. If I have a chance, i would love to see yours too:) I think the waistband version is fitter than other one. If you have any questions abot it, please comment on my blog.
DeleteP.S You live in San Francisco? Long time a go, I watched "Full house" a lot for studying English. Ha ha.
I took a couple of pictures of my dress but I don't know how to send them to you. I live in a "Full House" but instead of children now, we have 6 cats!
ReplyDeleteLisa

You are beautiful, your dresses are beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! I am so glad that hear from you(~▽~@)♪♪♪
DeleteThese are wonderful versions of the Marcy Tilton pattern. The one that has the kimono look is all done with the fabrics. I still have this pattern on my shelf and still wondering if I want to make it but seeing both your versions I probably try to make one this summer.

ReplyDeleteThank you for your compliment KM! I am glad that you said that😊
DeleteHi Eli, I love what you have done with your choice of fabrics; it would be nice to see the back, too! I am just about to start making this pattern and when I read the instructions I thought it would be difficult to do the gathering in the front (or whatever we choose to do instead of gathering) when the dress is already joined together. Do you think it would be easier to work on the front before attaching it to the rest of the dress?
ReplyDeleteHello, Jane. Thank you for visiting my blog. I totally love the pattern. For the normal version, I made the gathering in the front after attaching the front to the side dresses: and the belt version, before attaching the front to the side dresses. I think it doesn’t matter before attaching or after. Please go ahead. Good luck;)
