Burda 10-2016-117 Striped Overalls

Pink pink pink! Everywhere I look is pink! It's becoming cherry blossom season in Japan. A looooot of petals are stuck to the soles of my shoes. Are you enjoying the spring?

I wanted to make a jumper dress and was interested in "Cleo, Dungaree Dress" but I made the dress from Burda style magazine October 2016. (You can download here)

Is this an apron? No! I made the Jumper dress with a shiny striped denim. I usually choose a size 36 of burda patterns, but I thought this pattern was lager than others. I sewed a zipper down the back, but I could wear this dress without it. I added to the pattern's original length by 7 7/8 inches.
To be honest, I didn't like the dress at first because it looked like an apron. It wasn't flattering on me and its design was TOO YOUNG💀 Fortunately, I like the front top design, so I decided to change the Jumper dress to overalls.

First, I took away the parts of the front and back skirt (avoided the back zipper), so I adjusted and cut the pants parts of Vogue 8499.

I sewed on the pants parts instead of the skirt. If you would like to make an overalls version, it's easy to make it using a center seam pants pattern like Vogue 8499.

I sewed the eight decorative buttons on the front bodice. The jumper skirt turned into fantastic overalls! I would like to make full length overalls using brown linen with white buttons for summer. What do you think?

I was going to throw the jumper skirt away but I could save it. Feeling lucky! Someday, I would like to make a jumper skirt again.
I hope you are enjoying the spring😊 Thank you!

  1. What a fantastic pattern hack Eli! And the buttons are brilliant! We have spring here too but Noe as much blossom as in Japan. My favourite is the magnolia which doesn't last long.

  2. What a wonderful transformation! Like everything else you make, it is fabulous. This is the first week of nice Spring weather here in the northeastern U.S. The cherry blossoms are not yet in full bloom but probably will be in another week or two. Enjoy Spring!

    1. Thank you for your lovely comment, Tomasa. I think Japan's cherry blossom trees are in Washington D.C. And Japan US's gift (dog wood) keeps right on giving:)

  5. you created such a cute design and it is very chic, too! I love how the buttons look a bit like a sailor pant. Beautiful photos, Cat! I was in Japan at cherry blossom time a few years ago and will never forget how lovely it was.

Actually, this area is CEMETERY but I love and often go walk around there. He he.

  11. I'm not sure what to write about first :) So I think I will talk about the beautiful blossoms first. I am sure Japan must be such a beautiful country, away from the large city centres. Your gardens are so lovely - and , it seems, your cemeterys! Now, I should think you would find peace and quiet in a cemetery, a great place to walk. I have never been fortunate enough to visit, but would love to see the gardens especially. Now, to you - you look lovely, and by making the skirt into pants, have reduced the volume, which suits you better. And you do not look too young with your red shoes. Adding height with the very high heel also makes the outfit work.

    1. You are so kind. I really love seeing flowers, and the cemetery is one of my favorite places.
I was very disappointed when I saw the jumper skirt at first time, almost threw it away. However, I love these challenges and will work without fearing failure too. I'm looking forward to your post about bra making. Thanks a lot sweet Sarah!

  13. Changing it to overalls was a great idea! I like the midi length, and for some reason, I think full length overalls might look like too much brown fabric on you -- but then again, that's only my opinion and you can always shorten them if you don't like them long :)

  14. I thought I'd left a comment, but must have done something wrong when I entered it... anyway, I wanted to say how great this works as overalls. Thanks for showing how you altered the pattern,it's so useful. The midi length is lovely and how good do those red shoes look with them! Such pretty surroundings with all the blossom too.

    1. Thank you for your sweet comment, Diane! I wanted to make a full length overalls, but I didn't have much fabrics. I'm happy with the result because this denim was too heavy to make full length overalls.
