Vogue1479 '90s Old Man's Plaid Coat

'90s are back in fashion. I made this coat at the end of last year. I used Vogue1479.

Lately, the "Old Man" style has been in fashion in Japan during the past several years. I had been thinking about making a '90s styled coat. The Vogue pattern's envelope says pea-coat style, but I think it also looks like a "'90s Old Man's Coat" (This is a good thing). I wanted to make the coat using a mohair wool until I saw the envelope photo for the first time. I was glad that I had this fabric in my stash.
This coat has a lot pockets (Welt, lower patch, side seam and right inside pockets) , but I omitted to make the side seam and inside pockets. However, the jacket has enough pockets (Two big lower patch and welt pockets)! These welt pockets were bigger than I expected, and they are sufficiently big to put my gloves in. In the picture, the model's hands are placed in the side openings of the pockets. However, I omitted to make the side openings because it's a little bit hard for me to reach my hands at the sides. I raised the locations of the patch and welt pockets by 3/4 inches, but I didn't want to change the pocket locations anymore (The welt pockets are hidden by a big collar). If you like doing a quick sewing project, you can omit making the welt pockets.

I changed the design a little bit. I had much fabric, so I could make the sleeve and back belts, and matched the plaids. I cut these pockets and belts (Sleeve and back) before attaching the lining, because I wanted to match the plaids perfectly. I am proud that the pockets and belts were able to match the plaids! I usually leave some fabric after making clothes but I used most of the fabric this time.
I love the '90s-looking coat! I would make it again. It's sometimes hard to layer a fitted coat over a chunky or over-sized top, but this coat is good for wearing over such thick clothes. It's loosely fitted and comfortable to wear.

  13. This looks fantastic! Coats look fun to make but wool fabric is so expensive and I would probably ruin it. As always this was a great detailed review. I love seeing the things you see!
