Named Clothing Beryl Bomber Dress - Kimono and Military

Are you ready for fall? I made two bomber dresses: Black kimono dress and khaki military dress.

I have very happy news to share with you. "Pattern Review" has featured me in their blog! Named clothing pattern company went and released their autumn collection: Pattern Review has posted the review about these patterns (here)

I made two different types of dress using "Beryl Bomber Dress" of them. I like the dress pattern the best but love some others too. Let's take a look.

Agate Pencil Dress: Lovely! I would like to make it with a shiny fabric, satin, velvet, etc.

Gaia Quilted Coat: I like the cocoon shaped and the big collar. If I make it, I would like to use wool plaids. But I have lots of coat patterns, mmm....

Stella Shirt Dress: The pattern has two options for a top and dress. I will buy it because don't have any raglan sleeve shirt patterns. I'm sure it's useful for making a business for casual clothing.

Move on, my pattern review. I used heavyweight poly cotton. Look, lots of snakes! I thought it was too busy to make a dress, but it turned out to be better than I had expected.

It's a very unique pattern: Ribbed collar, exposed front zipper, elastic waist band, side-front patched pockets, ¾-length sleeves, etc. I cut a size 36. I almost didn't change the design but raised the waistline by only 1 inch.

Second version. I made the dress out of a black silk kimono from a second-hand kimono store. I took the kimono apart and washed it, so that it was completely transformed. It was only 600 Japanese yen ($6). The black kimonos are often worn for wedding ceremonies by married female relatives of the bride or groom. If I bought a new one like this from a department store, it would be around 100,000 - 1,000,000 Japanese yen ($1,000-10,000).

I wanted to wear it in two ways: like a dress and light coat. I omitted to make the vent in the front skirt, so I used an open-end zipper (27 3/4 inches in the length) instead of. I think this way is easier than making a vent.

I love downloadable pdf sewing patterns, because the cost of shipping to Japan is so high. Overall, I really really love Beryl Bomber Dress. It can be used with either lightweight or heavyweight fabric.
Thank you for reading. Have a good weekend!

  2. Oh my word! I adore both of these! I may need to get this bomber dress pattern because it just spans that gap between casual and dressy so well and can be dressed up or down.
I think perhaps the kimono fabric version is my favourite as the border print is gorgeous. Though the snake pattern is so different too. Fabulous!

  4. Wow what a find on the kimono. Clearly I need to come to Japan--a secondhand kimono store sounds like a total wonderland! The bomber dress has such cool style. I love the vertical placement of the snakes--it reminds me of a Marimekko print, and the changes you made on the silk version make for a cool blend of this kind of urban style with something more elegant.

  5. I really like the style of this dress! I haven't bought a Named pattern in a while, but I definitely like the new release of patterns. I love following your blog. It's so interesting learning about Japan through you. One day....I hope to come to Japan. I would love to see your country and indulge in fabric shopping too of course! That is an amazing savings at the second hand kimono store! Your fabrics you choose for your outfits are always fabulous.

  10. I am so not ready for Autumn... But I know I'll have to be soon, when I go back to Poland, it's cold and Autumn to the fullest there. *^v^*
I like both your versions of the dress, the military one is interesting because of the fabric, the snakes in the khaki shades feels very Autumn theme like. The silk dress is very elegant and it's great it can be worn as a coat, you could wear it with jeans or black trousers, very versatile!
Congatulations on being featured on Pattern Reviews blog! Named Clothing has some eye-catching patterns, I never tried a printed from pdf pattern but maybe I will try it with this brand. *^v^*

  11. Always so tedious living here in Australia. We seem to be behind all of you in the Northern Hemisphere. And seeing this Bomber Dress is why. It is just so gorgeous - and your two versions, are beautiful, so different. Your silk kimono version is just so special, while the poly cotton will be a great everyday dress. And your sewing is also beautiful- you certainly deserve to be featured on Pattern Review's blog.

  19. Both dresses look amazing. My favorite is the kimono one - the fabric is so gorgeous. I can't believe just how expensive they are in department stores. It's great that you can make them yourself. Congratulations on being featured. You are truly talented.

Brand-new kimonos are really expensive. Most of used-kimonos are tossed into the bottom drawer long long time. They are dirty and dusty, and too SMALL (People in old times are short!) to wear. I don't care abou that😁

I think making the vent is more tricky than the elastic waist. However, you can omit to make it😃 Happy sewing!

  27. Hello Eli Cat,
What a wonderful dress and coat! Both versions are very chic and modern in feel and really showcase the pattern and chosen fabrics well. Did you line either of them? Based on your inspiration, I am thinking of making one to be primarily worn as a coat.

I found your dresses via Mema. They are both amazing! I adore the way you fitted the snakes so exactely at the front zip. Such a perfect work. The one from the kimono looks lovely, the floral fabric paired with the rather sportive pattern gives a very special and charming look.
